Hotspot, Same Wi-Fi, or Wi-Fi Direct — which is fastest?

Wi-Fi Direct: a private link with no router

Wi-Fi Direct lets two devices form their own small network and talk to each other directly, with no router or internet in between. Think of it as the two phones shaking hands and opening a private lane just for them. Because nothing else is on that lane and there is no middleman, it is usually the fastest and most reliable option, and it works anywhere — you do not need an existing Wi-Fi network or any signal at all.

Modern phones can run Wi-Fi Direct on the 5 GHz band, which carries far more data than the older 2.4 GHz band. That is where the headline speeds come from: on a good link you can comfortably see 20 MB/s and often quite a bit more, which turns a large video transfer into a few seconds of waiting. For phone-to-phone sharing, Wi-Fi Direct is the one to reach for.

Hotspot: when there is no shared network

The hotspot method has one device create a small temporary network that the other joins. It is the answer when you are out somewhere with no common Wi-Fi to lean on — a park, a car, an airport. The two devices connect by tapping each other or by scanning a QR code, which carries the connection details so there is nothing to type. Once joined, files flow across that little private network.

Hotspot speeds are generally very good and, like Wi-Fi Direct, do not rely on any outside infrastructure. The main thing to know is that the exact band and speed depend on the device creating the hotspot; some phones create it on 5 GHz for full speed, while others fall back to 2.4 GHz, which is slower. If a hotspot transfer feels sluggish, that band difference is usually why.

Same Wi-Fi: convenient, but router-dependent

If both devices are already sitting on the same network — your home or office Wi-Fi — OLOW Share can simply use it.   • Out and about, no shared Wi-Fi: use a hotspot and connect by QR code.
  • At home or the office with a good router: Same Wi-Fi is effortless and can be very fast.
  • A transfer feels slow on Same Wi-Fi: switch to Wi-Fi Direct to cut out the router entirely — this alone often doubles throughput.

Tips to get the fastest transfer

  • Keep the two devices within arm's reach while a large transfer runs.
  • Prefer a method and band that use 5 GHz on both devices.
  • Keep both screens awake and the app in the foreground during big jobs.
  • Make sure the receiving device has enough free storage before you start.
  • For a huge number of tiny files, expect a little more overhead than a single large file of the same total size.

QR versus radar: two ways to connect

There are eight bits in a byte, so a link advertised as "up to 300 Mbps" tops out around 37 MB/s in theory — and rather less in practice, once you account for real-world overhead.   • Check the band. If one device has dropped to 2.4 GHz, that alone can cut speed several times over. Switching to Wi-Fi Direct encourages a clean 5 GHz link.
  • Reduce interference. Step away from microwaves and very crowded Wi-Fi areas, and pause other heavy network use on the same devices.
  • Free up storage. A receiver that is nearly full, or writing to slow storage, can become the bottleneck.
  • Keep the app in front. Some phones throttle background apps aggressively; keeping both screens on and the app open lets it run at full tilt.

A word on battery and heat

Moving a lot of data quickly asks something of the radios and the storage, so during a very large transfer you may notice the phone warm up a little and the battery tick down faster than usual. This is expected and harmless. For a genuinely huge job — say, cloning an entire phone — it is worth starting with both devices comfortably charged. For everyday sharing of photos and clips, the cost is negligible, and it is still far kinder to your battery than a long cloud upload would be.

One last thing worth knowing: a transfer always runs at the pace of the slower of the two devices and the weaker end of the link. Pairing a brand-new phone with an older one will land somewhere between their individual capabilities, so if you have a choice of which devices to use for a big job, the newer pair will always finish first.
