How OLOW Share moves files without the internet

Most apps quietly send your files on a long round-trip: up to a server somewhere, then back down to the other device. OLOW Share skips that entirely and connects your two devices directly. Here is what "no internet" really means, how the connection is formed, and why the result is faster and more private.

The hidden cost of "just send it"

When you drop a folder of holiday videos into a chat app or a cloud drive, a lot happens that you never see. The files are uploaded over your mobile data or Wi-Fi, stored on a company's servers, and then downloaded again on the other side. Along the way they are usually re-compressed to save the provider bandwidth, which is why the photo your friend receives often looks softer than the one you sent. You also pay for it twice: once in time, waiting for the upload and download, and once in data, which matters a great deal if you are on a limited plan or roaming.

There is a privacy cost too. Even if you delete the message afterwards, a copy of your file existed on someone else's computer, if only briefly. For a meme that hardly matters. For personal photos, documents, or a backup of your whole phone, it is a different story.

What "no internet" actually means

OLOW Share is built around a simple idea: the two devices are usually sitting a few feet apart, so why send the data halfway around the world? Instead of the internet, it uses a direct link between the devices themselves. Your files travel from one phone straight to the other and never leave your immediate surroundings.

Because the connection is local, it does not depend on having a signal at all. You can transfer files in airplane mode, deep in a basement, on a train with no reception, or in a country where you have not bought a SIM. The internet is simply not part of the equation for the transfer itself. (The app may still use a small amount of data for ads or to check for updates when you are online, but the file transfer does not.)

The three ways two devices connect

Under the hood, OLOW Share can form that direct link in three ways, and it picks a sensible default for you:

  • Wi-Fi Direct — the two devices talk to each other directly, forming their own tiny network without any router in between. This is usually the fastest and most reliable option, and it needs no existing Wi-Fi.
  • Hotspot — one device creates a small temporary network and the other joins it, connecting by tapping a nearby device or scanning a QR code. Handy when you are out and about with no shared Wi-Fi.
  • Same Wi-Fi — if both devices are already on the same network at home or the office, they can use it. This is convenient, though the speed then depends on your router.

What happens during a transfer

From your side, sending files feels like three taps, but a neat little handshake is happening underneath. First you open the app and choose what to send — a few photos, an app, an entire folder, whatever you like. Then the app discovers the other device: on the sender you see nearby devices appear on a radar, or you scan a QR code shown by the receiver. You tap the device you want, the other person approves the connection with a single tap, and the two devices link up.

Then the transfer begins immediately. Rather than hashing every file up front and making you wait, OLOW Share starts streaming right away and writes each file straight to storage on the other side. A progress bar shows the size, the live speed in megabytes per second, and the percentage complete, so you always know exactly where things stand. When it finishes, both devices show a clean confirmation — "Sent" on one side, "Received" on the other — and the files are ready to open.

Why it is so fast

Speed comes down to a simple truth: a direct local link has far more bandwidth than a typical internet upload. Home broadband upload speeds are often a fraction of download speeds, so pushing a large video to the cloud is slow even before the other person starts downloading. A direct 5 GHz Wi-Fi Direct link, by contrast, can move data at tens of megabytes per second, so a big clip that would take minutes through the cloud crosses in seconds.

There is also nothing to compress and no server round-trip. The bytes leave one device and arrive on the other unchanged, which is why your photos and videos land at full resolution, exactly as they were. No quality is quietly traded away to save someone else's bandwidth.

Why it is private

Because the files move directly between the devices you choose, they stay on your local network the whole time. Nothing is uploaded to us or to any cloud, there is no copy sitting on a company server, and there is no account to create — you install the app and start sharing. Every incoming connection also has to be approved on the receiving device, so a stranger cannot simply push files onto your phone.

It is worth being precise here: local transfers and the Web Share feature are not end-to-end encrypted, so the sensible advice is to use them on networks you trust and only share with devices you recognise. What you get is a system that keeps your files off the internet and out of the cloud by design, which for most everyday sharing is exactly the privacy that matters.

What you can send — and how much

OLOW Share is not limited to photos. You can send videos, music, documents, contacts, whole folders, and even your installed apps as APK files, which makes moving to a new phone genuinely quick. You can select entire categories at once instead of picking files one by one. And there are no size limits: a single voice note and a fifty-gigabyte batch of 4K video go through the same simple flow.

When offline sharing wins

Direct, offline transfers shine in exactly the moments cloud sharing struggles: handing a stack of photos to a friend when neither of you has good signal, moving a large project between your own devices, setting up a brand-new phone from an old one, or simply sharing something personal without it passing through a third party. It also saves your mobile data and, because there is no long upload, often your battery too.

How it compares to cloud and chat-app sharing

It helps to line the options up side by side. With a cloud drive, you upload once, wait, then share a link the other person downloads from — that is two trips over the internet, a copy left sitting on a server, and a monthly storage limit hanging over you. With a chat app, the convenience is hard to beat, but the files are almost always compressed, stripped of their original quality and sometimes their metadata, and again routed through a company's servers. Both are perfectly fine for small, disposable things you would not mind losing.

OLOW Share trades that convenience-with-strings for something more direct. There is no upload step and no separate download step — just one hop from device to device. Nothing is compressed, so a 4K video arrives as a 4K video. Nothing is stored anywhere except the two devices you chose. A few common questions

Does it work between two different phone brands? Yes. Any two devices running the app can connect, regardless of make or model. And through Web Share, even devices without the app can receive using nothing but a browser.

Do I need a cable or to be plugged in? No cables at all — the connection is entirely wireless. It is worth keeping both phones reasonably charged for a very large transfer, simply because moving tens of gigabytes takes a bit of energy, but nothing needs to be plugged in.

Will it use my mobile data? The transfer itself does not; it runs entirely over the local link. The app may use a small amount of data for ads or to check for updates when you happen to be online, but your files never travel over your data plan.

Is there a limit to how many files I can send at once? No. You can select whole categories at a time — every photo from a trip, an entire music library, a folder full of documents — and send them all in a single go.
