Send from Android to an iPhone, PC, or Smart TV with Web Share

Not everyone you share with has the app — and with Web Share, they do not need it. This is how an Android phone can hand files to an iPhone, a laptop, or even a television, using nothing more than a web browser on the other side.

The cross-platform problem

Direct device-to-device sharing is wonderful when both devices run the same app. But real life is mixed: you have an Android phone, your friend has an iPhone, your work laptop runs Windows, and the family television is a Smart TV. Asking everyone to install the same app just to receive a few photos is friction nobody wants. The usual fallback is to email the files to yourself or upload them to a cloud link — slow, lossy, and back on the internet again.

What Web Share is

Web Share solves this by turning your Android phone into a tiny local web page. When you start it, the phone serves your selected files at a local address on your network and shows a link and a QR code. The other device simply opens that link in any web browser on the same network and downloads the files. There is nothing to install on their side — if it has a browser, it can receive.

Because the page is served from your phone over your local network, the files still do not go up to any cloud. The other device is downloading them directly from you, right there on the spot.

How it works, step by step

The flow is deliberately simple:

  • On your Android phone, open Web Share and choose the files or folders you want to share.
  • The phone displays a short web link and a QR code.
  • On the other device, either scan the QR code with its camera or type the link into a browser.
  • A clean web page appears listing your files, with buttons to download individual items or grab everything at once, often as a single ZIP.
  • The other device downloads straight from your phone. When you are done, you stop Web Share and the page is gone.

That is the entire process. No sign-in, no app on their end, no cloud middleman.

Which devices can receive

Anything with a modern web browser can be on the receiving end, which in practice means almost everything:

  • iPhone and iPad — open the link in Safari and save the files. This is the easiest way to hand photos to someone on iOS.
  • Windows PCs and Macs — download straight into your computer's Downloads folder; great for pulling a video onto a laptop without a cable.
  • Chromebooks — the browser is the whole system, so this just works.

One requirement: the same network

The single thing to remember is that both devices need to be on the same local network for the browser to reach your phone's page — the same home or office Wi-Fi, for example. If you are somewhere without shared Wi-Fi, you can create a hotspot from your phone and have the other device join it first; then the Web Share link works over that little network. Once they are on the same network, opening the link is all it takes.

Is it private?

Yes, in the ways that matter for everyday sharing: the files are served directly from your phone and stay on your local network, nothing is uploaded to a server, and no account is involved. As with the app's other transfers, Web Share runs over a plain local connection and is not end-to-end encrypted, so the sensible guidance is to use it on networks you trust and to stop the share when you have finished, which takes the page offline again.

Downloading a file from a web page is one of the oldest, most universally supported things a browser does, so there is no new software, no compatibility matrix, and no "please install our app to continue" wall. Your phone plays the role a website normally would — it hosts the files at an address — and the other device simply visits it. Because that address lives on your local network rather than the public internet, the whole exchange stays between the two of you, but the mechanics are the same familiar "open a link, download a file" that everyone already knows how to do.

How Web Share compares to AirDrop and Nearby Share

You may know Apple's AirDrop or Android's Nearby Share (Quick Share). They are excellent, but each is walled into its own ecosystem: AirDrop moves things beautifully between Apple devices, and Nearby Share does the same across Android and Chromebooks and Windows. The moment you cross the line — Android to iPhone, say — they stop being an option, and you are back to email or a cloud link.

Does the other person need an account or app? No. They only open a link in a browser. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for.

Can they send files back to me the same way? Web Share is designed for handing files out from your phone. To go the other direction between two devices that both have the app, you would use a normal direct transfer; to pull files from a computer, the easiest route is usually to share from that side.

Why won't the link open? Almost always because the two devices are not on the same network, or a "guest" Wi-Fi is isolating them from each other. Put both on the same normal Wi-Fi (or the same hotspot) and try again.

Is anything uploaded to the internet? No. The files are served straight from your phone over the local network and are gone the moment you stop the share. As noted above, the connection is not end-to-end encrypted, so favour networks you trust.
